Pink sapphire fan ring

Three rows of 28 little natural pink sapphires (84 total!) hand set in solid 9ct yellow gold, each one in a hand carved fan shape.

The texture of this ring is mesmerising, you can feel the amount of meticulous work that has gone in to making this. The hand cut fan shapes catch the light at all the angles and sparkle all over. 

I started with a plain band, 4.5mm wide and marked out the spacing for the fans, then drilled and burred out the holes for the sapphires. I brought up little beads with my graver and beaded them so they are nice and smooth and even. I cut the scallop shapes around the gems with my graver (a hand held tool which uses my strength and control only, no machines involved for this part of the process.)
I make many of these rings but they are all different as I engrave each one by eye.
I love engraving with a graver, the process, the simplicity, the skill and the result. You just can’t get that bright sparkle and hand crafted feel with laser cut or cast or roll printing techniques.
